DISCUSSION: The Ending of The Giver



What is your take on the ending of The Giver?  Do you feel it was intended to be a happy ending or sad ending?

  1. I think it was a happy ending because at the end it was talking about how they were close to a village and that there was music and that they would go to the village and live not die.

  2. I thought the author did a great jobon the book but i thought the ending was left up to you so i didnt like the ending

  3. I liked the ending because I felt that Louis Lowry made it happy. :) If she was going to lead the whole book up to that part why would she make them die at the end? It wouldn't make sense! So I liked the book...... even though I'm sure Bria didn't.

  4. I think it was suppose to be a sad ending because they were in the snow freezing and they are nearly dead from starvation and they are super cold. I did not like the book that much.

  5. Do you think Jonas felt freedom from the society was worth it, if they they died at the end?

    1. I think the ending was supposed to be happy even though i like sad endings and I hope they just ended up in elsewhere because that would be awesome because i felt bad that they had to live in such a strict society

    2. I think Jonas would have been happier being free and dying with Gabriel than living in the community filled with lies and no emotions.
